Worcester, Mass. native set to take over reigns of Guardian Football

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 26, 2019) – The St. Peter-Marian athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Donovan as the next head coach of the St. Peter-Marian football team. The announcement was made earlier today by Associate Superintendent of Secondary Schools, Michael Clark.

Donovan joins the SPM sidelines toting a wealth of knowledge having served the last 12 seasons under perennial Central Massachusetts coaches Patrick Haverty and Tom Bingham. For the last seven seasons, Donovan witnessed increasing responsibilities as a member of the Fitchburg State University coaching staff, serving as the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator since 2012. With the Falcons, Donovoan worked primarily with the quarterbacks and wide receivers, while also serving as the programs Academic Coordinator and Video Coordinator.

On the field, Donovan guided Fitchburg State's high-flying offense to several record breaking seasons, including a 2015 season where the Falcons claimed the top-seed in ECAC "Robert M. Scotty" Whitleaw Bowl. More importantly off the field, charged with the task of monitoring academic progress, Donovan mentored 16 MASCAC All-Academic honorees, including a Capital One Academic All-District Team member.

A proud alum and supporter of catholic education, Donovan also served five seasons as an Assistant Coach for the St. Bernard's football program, holding multiple roles as the team's Special Teams Coordinator and Passing Game Coordinator.

"I am honored to be named Saint Peter-Marian's next head football coach," said Donovan. "I am thrilled for the opportunity to run an elite program that both embodies the mission of Saint Peter-Marian High School and honors the great tradition of Guardian football."

Donovan currently resides in Worcester, Massachusetts with his wife and works as a math teacher within the Fitchburg Public School system. He will begin his head coaching duties effective immediately.

A players meeting is scheduled for after school on Friday, March 1st, at 3pm. All players interested in joining the SPM Football team next season should attend.
