Malm and Dumphy pace Guardians to season-opening win

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 9, 2017) - The St. Peter-Marian football team opened up its 2017 season at home this afternoon, downing the Rockets of Auburn High, 20-0 in non-conference action.

Seniors Matt Dumphy (Worcester, Mass.) and Dan Malm (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Guardians offensive efforts, combining two scores on the afternoon. Dumphy brought in a 32 yard TD reception, while Malm scampered for a 61 yard run to find the endzone. Junior Owen Leary (Holden, Mass.) also found paydirt, connecting with Malm on a 10 yard TD. Malm finished the day 8-for-12 with 130 yards passing. 

The Guardians defense was spectacular throughout the day, holding the Rockets scoreless, despite Auburn marching within scoring distance on several occasions. Seniors Pat Creagh (Worcester, Mass.), Josh Pace (Worcester, Mass.) and Garrett Hooper (Thompson, Conn.) were storng upfront for SPM, while sophomre Jared Kapurch (Charlton, Mass.) and senior Kosta Drosidis (Holden, Mass.) found themselves in the mix often.

With the victory, head coach Justin McKay earns his first career victory as a Guardian. 

St. Peter-Marian (1-0, 0-0 CMC) will be back in action next Saturday as it visits Uxbridge at 1 pm.
