Matt Dumphy (Worcester, Mass) selected as St. Peter-Marian Athlete of the Week after his performance in the SPM Football 41-35 victory over Oakmont.
The senior captain led the Guardians offensively, posting nine carries for 136 yards and three touchdowns, including a 99 yard TD run.
In addition to being the winning touchdown, the 99-yard touchdown run by Dumphy is memorable for other reasons.
According to Central Mass. high school football historians Mike Richard and Bill Ballou, Dumphy’s run is just the fourth 99-yarder from scrimmage in CMass football history.
Billy Collins of North Middlesex was the first to do it against Murdock on Nov. 6, 1965. The last two were far more recent, with Groton-Dunstable’s Shane Penney doing it against Tantasqua on Oct. 9, 2009, and Sutton’s Tucker Haerle going 99 yards against Bartlett on Nov. 6, 2015.
St. Peter-Marian (3-2, 0-0 CMC) will be back in action next Saturday as it visits Burncoat High at 12pm.
